Photos: Rebel leader Machar in Jonglei

Riek Machar, ousted vice president of South Sudan and leader of opposition forces, has taken up camp in one of the rebel-controlled territories of Jonglei State.

Riek Machar, ousted vice president of South Sudan and leader of opposition forces, has taken up camp in one of the rebel-controlled territories of Jonglei State.

The opposition leader’s top commander in the region, Peter Gadet, fought the government army back and forth for nearly a month for control of Bor, capital of Jonglei. Other areas of the state farther to the north are presently beyond the reach of government troops.

In photos published by Reuters, a news agency which sent a photojournalist into the rebel-held territory, Machar appears among bodyguards alongside his wife Angelina Teny, who also appears in army fatigues and in one photo with a laptop.

Since commercial mobile phone networks are cut in Jonglei State, the rebel leader appears speaking on a Thuraya satellite phone.
