More than 3,000 people have arrived in Twic County of Warrap State fleeing conflict in neighboring Unity State. They are being aided by the World Food Programme and other humanitarian agencies.
In Turalei registration of IDPs so far has reached at least 3,190, with others reportedly on the move toward Turalei via Aweng area.
Far higher numbers of displaced are thought to have fled east or south from the conflict areas of Mayom, Rubkona and Bentiu, and are currently still within Unity State at villages or in the bush.
Within two days of the recapture of Bentiu by SPLA forces the UN revised its estimate of the number of displaced in the country to over 400,000.
In remarks in Turalei during a one day visit to the town Toby Lanzer, UN Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan, pointed out that it was the fourth Sunday since fighting broke out in Juba.
He commended the host community in Turalei for “opening their arms and their hearts to the people who have fled from Bentiu and from Mayom County.”
He said the UN could give some food assistance and basic items to help people get through the difficult situation.
Lanzer also said that over 400,000 people have been displaced by violence in South Sudan. He said he had witnessed in Bentiu some of the violence that drove people into Warrap.
Commenting on the events that happened in Unity State, he said he witnessed there “drunken opposition forces looting the goods that we have which are for the population.”
