Mingkamen in eastern Lakes State has a new market building with space for 192 trader stalls. The market was launched yesterday in the presence of local authorities and UN officials.
The UN Development Programme (UNDP), which supported the construction of the new market centre, announced in a press release that it was built by the community in partnership with Nile Hope organization with UNDP support. Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom funded the project.
According to UNDP, the construction of the new market also provided ’emergency employment’ to 182 residents over a period of three months. The market will be managed by a local steering committee, with representation from both displaced and the host community.
