As many as 6,700 families lost their shelters at the Malakal Protection Site in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State last week after fire ripped through part of the site, according to assessment teams of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Malakal’s protection site was rocked by violence between groups of Shilluk and Dinka camp residents starting Wednesday night and continuing Thursday. Witnesses told Radio Tamazuj that SPLA soldiers infiltrated into the camp and joined in the fighting. Fire devastated parts of the camp; at least 18 were killed and more than 90 wounded.

IOM South Sudan stated on its Facebook page that it is working with Danish Refugee Council and Medair to constructing temporary shelters and distribute relief items. “IOM is dispatching additional shelter materials and relief items to arrive in the coming days,” the aid group said.
