South Sudan's President Salva Kiir today signed a peace deal in the capital Juba more than a week after missing a deadline set by regional mediators for signing the so-called “compromise agreement,” which was rejected by elements of the ruling party SPLM.

Kiir signed the deal only after expressing reservations about some of its provisions.

The signing was witnessed by several East African heads of state, including the President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyata and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.
