Theft of fuel from MTN Company’s premises in Mabony in Abyei Area earlier this week caused the mobile phone network to go down.

Abyei Today newsletter reported that the MTN telecommunications network was “severely disrupted” by the theft.

The community police commander, Dabaang Dak Akol, said this was the latest of several incidents that had been reported. He warned of the dangers of thieves siphoning off fuel into jerry cans.

Several other criminal incidents are also reported in the disputed territory between Sudan and South Sudan, including the arrest of a man accused of tricking market traders out of more than 200,000 South Sudanese pounds.

“The suspect is alleged to have taken money from traders, saying he would convert it to dollars and send it to countries from which they imported goods,” Abyei Today reports, citing police investigator Arithok Akuei Arithok.

He will be sent for trial in Kwajok in Warrap State.
