President Salva Kiir has called for thorough investigations into last week’s shootings in the Sherikat neighbourhood of Juba, saying the perpetrators must face justice.

At least five people were killed in Sherikat last Wednesday when a gunman identified as a distance relative of President Kiir opened fire on civilians.

The prime suspect, Lual Akook Wol Kiir, was announced dead a day later.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony for members of the investigation committee in Juba on Sunday, Kiir urged the committee to conduct a detailed investigation and establish details of the shooting incident.

"A detailed investigation must be conducted, and everyone involved in the incident must be brought to a fair trial," he added.

According to the South Sudanese leader, another committee had been formed to investigate a related incident in the town of Bor, after rumours emerged that natives of Bahr el Ghazal were allegedly being targeted.

Kiir, however, said that although he had not yet received reports of any killing in Bor town, the committee would conduct an investigation to establish if any lives or even properties were lost.

Meanwhile, Reuben Madol Arol, the chairman of the seven-member investigation committee said they would investigate the incident and report on time.

Major General Daniel Justin, the police spokesperson told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that 20 people, among them 14 civilians, are being investigated over the incident that took place in Sherikat last week.

He said the police, working in cooperation with the presidential investigation committee, would complete its work within one week.

Justin said the incident was triggered by wrangles over a disputed land.
