People with disabilities want representation in Wau state assembly

People living disabilities in South Sudan’s Wau State have raised concerns over neglect and demanded for representation in the state assembly.

People living disabilities in South Sudan’s Wau State have raised concerns over neglect and demanded for representation in the state assembly.

John Akot, the disability group chairman, said they met with the acting legislative assembly speaker on Friday for the purpose of presenting their demands to the state parliament.

He said they are facing enormous challenges as they lack facilities that are tailor made to meet their needs.

Some of the disabled people asked lawmakers to pass laws that grant them rights in the community.

For her part, the acting speaker, Viola Alexander Umelai welcomed the petition, saying the state assembly will enact laws for people with disabilities.

Alexander urged citizens to respect people living with disabilities in societies.

South Sudan constitution recognizes the rights of people with disabilities and people with special needs.
