The United Nations on Monday said its peacekeepers prevented the abduction of internally displaced people by two armed individuals wearing army uniforms outside the protection of civilians’ site in Bentiu on Saturday.

Citing a report from the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said a Mongolian Quick Reaction Force was deployed to the scene when the UN mission first noticed the soldiers harassing the civilians.

“The troops fired warning shots over the heads of the soldiers who were also behaving aggressively towards the peacekeepers, including firing at them. The soldiers fled to the bush,” the UN said in a statement.

"No casualties were reported,” it added.

The world body said it has reported the incident to the SPLA leadership in the region, who assured the mission that they will investigate the issue.

Bentiu is one of the UN’s largest Protection of Civilians site in South Sudan with about 117,654 people living there.
