A three-day peace conference kicked off on Wednesday in Negero County of Western Equatoria State aimed to enhance peace and unity among the youth.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj from Western Equatoria State, Justin Gwodi, the adviser to the commissioner of Negero County, said the conference, which is organized by the Nagero Central Youth for Development (NCYD) Association, is to discuss issues affecting the county, especially insecurity and tribalism.

He said the conference brought together sons and daughters of Nagero County to consolidate peace. “We’re here, the sons and daughters of Nagero, to discuss the issues affecting Nagero, especially issues of insecurity and tribalism in Nagero,” said Gwodi.

“We agree all of us, those out of Nagero County, to come back to join our brothers on the ground to tell ourselves what is happening? Who is doing that? Why are we doing that to our brothers?”

He further called on the people of Nagero County to love one another as sons and daughters of Nagero regardless of their political affiliations. ” The targeted people are the youth. The killing is done by youth but instigated by politicians. Despite all this, we sons and daughters of Nagero, whether Balanda or Azande or being SPLM or SPLM-IO at the end, we are sons and daughters of Nagero County,” he said.

Michael Charles, one of the participants, said the conference will benefit the youth as it seeks avenues of unity and the creation of developmental projects.

Charles said without peace and unity, there would be no development. He pointed out that the conference is targeting young people because the majority of them are involved in violence and conflicts.

“Our main target was for youth to come together because youth have been creating problems without any reason. The other reason is for peace, love and respect for elders,” he explained.

More than 200 youth are attending the ongoing peace and development conference.
