Pastoralists and crop farmers in border areas between Western Bahr el Ghazal and Warrap states have agreed to end violence and co-exist peacefully, local officials said.

Pastoralists and crop farmers in border areas between Western Bahr el Ghazal and Warrap states have agreed to end violence and co-exist peacefully, local officials said.

The agreement that spells out terms and conditions for the pastoralists to graze their animals during the migration season was reached at a meeting held in Kwarjina County of Western Bahr el Ghazal state last week.

The meeting was attended by more than 50 participants, who included government officials and area chiefs.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Marko Mabor Ajiec, the Executive Director of Tonj South County in Warrap State said cattle keepers from his area and farmers from Kwarjina and Alur areas in Western Bahr el Ghazal agreed to improve relations between them.

He further said both sides agreed to form a committee that would create awareness among citizens about the outcomes of the meeting and abide by its terms.

Mabor explained that the committee’s mandate is to develop a plan to inform the local population of the importance of the agreement.

For his part, Angelo Uthiur, the Executive Director of the now defunct Alur County said the meeting aimed at resolving disputes between cattle keepers from Tonj South and farmers from his area.

He said it was also resolved that all forms of violence be stopped to allow citizens return to their areas and continue with their activities.

"The committee will meet again in Tonj town to follow-up on the outcomes of the meeting and inform the citizens," Uthiur explained.
