The Chinese embassy in South Sudan has been partially evacuated following fighting in Juba last week, according to the website of China Radio International.
“Non-essential embassy staff are among 49 Chinese nationals who have returned to China on a special flight which left South Sudan on Saturday,” the radio station reported.
However, the exact number of diplomatic staff evacuated was not specified in the official report.
China is among a growing number of countries which are evacuating their citizens from Juba amid fears fighting between supporters of the country’s president and vice-president may erupt again.
Hundreds died in the violence, which involved fighting between SPLA and SPLA-IO, the two signatories to South Sudan’s 2015 peace deal, as well as targeted attacks on civilians. Two Chinese peacekeepers were among the dead.
