Parliament Nuer caucus rejects 28 states amendments

James Kuich, the head of Nuer caucus in South Sudan’s parliament, said his group categorically rejects the constitutional amendments passed by the national legislature last week.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj, Kuich said the move contravenes the signed peace agreement which is meant to be the law of the land. Kuich said the amendments should have been made after organizing a constitutional conference for the entire political spectrum in South Sudan.

He indicated that the amendments leave South Sudan without states, though the transitional Constitution defines the territories of South Sudan as 10 states.

Now, the amendments leave the door open with regard to the number of states, according to the MP.

The lawmaker further questioned the legality of procedures followed by parliament to pass the constitutional amendments. The parliamentary speaker has said only 189 MPs were present during the session, fewer than the 198 required for a valid vote.
