Pagan Amum says campaigning for foreign intervention in South Sudan

Pagan Amum Okiech, former Secretary General of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and leader of the SPLM Former Detainees (SPLM-FDs) says he is heading an international and regional campaign for international trusteeship to be imposed on South Sudan as the only way to restore peace and stability in the world’s youngest nation.

Pagan Amum told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that foreign intervention into South Sudan will definitely force Prsident Salva Kiir and his allies to resign, saying it will also give a chance for the formation of a transitional government of technocrats supervised by the United Nations that would prepare the country for elections.

“We are now mobilizing and explaining the situation in South Sudan, the collapsing of the peace agreement, the agreement has collapsed and it has been killed by President Salva Kiir”said Amum.

“The intervention can restore peace, and then force President Salva Kiir and his illegitimate government now to step down so that the chance can be given to a national government of technocrats” he added.

The leading SPLM member accused Salva Kiir of failing to lead South Sudan, saying President Kiir has already scrapped the peace deal signed last August. According to Amum, the international intervention is the only way to save South Sudan from collapsing.

Meanwhile, Michael Makuei Lueth, South Sudan Information Minister, advised the SPLM Former Detainees who are still serving in the unity government in Juba to clarify their position, saying their leader Pagan Amum who is a former Detainee (FDs) is campaigning against the same government they are serving.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Makuei described members of the SPLM-FDs faction as spoiled children of the international community. The South Sudanese official accused the group of working for the international community in order to get power.
