Over two million South Sudanese Pounds were stolen from South Sudan’s Council of States by unidentified criminals over the weekend, a member of the Council said.

It was not immediately clear why such a large amount of money was being kept in an office and had not been deposited into a bank.

Michael Lusike, Deputy Chairperson of Information and Members Affairs Committee in the Council of States, told Radio Tamazuj that the money was stolen from the office of the upper house of parliament by unknown thieves on Sunday.

“We suspect that there is something wrong somewhere, I think it was an organized theft, I think this thing is being done by dealers,” he said.

According to Michael, the money was meant for the reception of Sudan’s Speaker of Council of States who visited Juba recently.

The lawmaker pointed out that two security guards who were on duty are under arrest pending investigation. Michael pointed out that the investigation into the theft is underway.

In July last year, an amount of 490, 000 SSP was also stolen from the Council of States by unknown criminals after poisoning three of the security guards by sending some girls to give them drugged food, incapacitating them.
