Nearly a thousand individuals have undergone free eye surgeries in Uror County in South Sudan’s Jonglei State.
The free eye camp commenced on May 29th and concluded on June 8th. The Tuach Riek Gai Foundation organized the camp with support from the Carter Centre.
Rebecca Nyanur Kai, the county health director, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the health camp specifically focused on treating patients with trachoma and cataracts.
“A total of 992 patients from various parts of the county and neighbouring counties received treatment for cataracts and trachoma. We are happy with the program, which concluded successfully on June 8th,” she stated.
Machot Gatluaak Kenyjak, the Uror County commissioner, commended the initiative as a relief and appealed for the extension of the eye camp.
Machot explained that the weeklong operation brought joy to the people of Uror. He added that the county is grateful to these doctors and hopes they will continue organizing such camps, as there is a significant number of people with eye-related issues here.
Gatluak Reath Wuol, a Uror resident, expressed jubilation about the camp, saying, “Seven of my relatives were among those who received surgeries. They have now regained their sight. We are delighted with the success of the free eye camp.”
