More than 900 floods-displaced persons in Duk County of Jonglei State on Friday received relief food items after months without support.
The beneficiaries, mainly women and children, arrived in Duk Padiet town in October last year after fleeing their homes in Ayod and Twic East counties due to the floods there.
“We are happy that we have received this support for the first time since our arrival last year. Our problem now is that shelters, mats, and mosquito nets are lacking,” Eliza Nyanadhom, one of the displaced said.
Ayen Deng, also a beneficiary, urged the government and other relevant aid agencies to provide them with basic healthcare services.
“We have been in the open. Now that we received these relief foods, we need utensils, shelters, and health services. The food items we received from the World Food Programme include sorghum, beans, and cooking oil,” she said.
For his part, Elijah Manyok Ayiei, the Duk County Executive Director, welcomed the support, and called on other relevant aid agencies to intervene, saying the displaced lack access to healthcare services and clean drinking water.
According to the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, the floods have displaced more than 400,000 from their homes, destroying their livelihoods since July 2020.
