Authorities in South Sudan’s Mayiendit county of Unity State say 8,849 households have been displaced by floods since August this year.
The county coordinator of the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (SSRC) Mr. Mathew Raan told RadioTamazuj Thursday that the displaced from about eight villages are now camped on high ground around the county.
“Many flood-displaced people are in Tutnyang payam within Mayiendit county while others have gone to Rubkuach,” he said. “These are the only highlands in Mayiendit North county for displaced people when there is a disaster like this.”
According to Raan, an assessment was carried out to map out the most affected areas and that the displaced communities are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
One of the victims Nhial Kuany Wich said, “We received some food from the World Food Programs. We requested humanitarian aid to support us during this very difficult situation. We are only eating waterlily.”
