Police authorities in Bor town of South Sudan’s Jonglei State have arrested about 79 youth including three chiefs for involvement in a fight over girl elopement on the outskirt of Bor town.

Two groups in Thony Island were on Friday night and Saturday morning engaged in a brawl after a girl eloped with a man in the area. At least 20 people were reportedly injured during the brawl.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Major-General Daniel Mabior, a police officer in charge of operations in Bor town said the fight among the two groups started on Friday after a man who eloped with his girlfriend was beaten by the girl’s relatives during a dance.

The official pointed out 79 youth including 3 chiefs were arrested by the police on Saturday, adding they are still searching for the ones who are still at large.

Major Mabior added that they are carrying out investigations into the incident.

Daniel Ayual, a deputy director for administration and finance at Bor Hospital confirmed 6 people were critically wounded and that they are being treated at the hospital.
