Authorities in Duk County of Jonglei State said about 70 cows stolen during a raid there on Friday have been recovered.
On Saturday, the county authorities reported that an armed group raided several camps in the Patiot area of the County’s Ageer Payam, and went away with over 100 cows. Since then, local youth were reported to have been pursuing the raiders in a bid to recover the stolen animals.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj this morning, Ahou Dual, the executive director of the defunct Duk Payuel County, said 70 of the raided cows were recovered Sunday after clashes.
“The attackers were heading towards Greater Pibor. But after they were followed for a day, the local youth managed to recover 70 cows. The youth are now on their way home. We will get a full report on those killed or injured during the encounter as soon as the youth arrive,” he added.
Cattle raids are commonplace among the communities in Greater Jonglei. Decades of the practice have led to displacement and deaths among the locals in the region.
In June this year, a committee was formed to reconcile the rival communities. But the committee has yet to finalize its work.
