Over 65,000 people in Ajak Central County of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are living in deplorable conditions, with the majority surviving on tree leaves, an official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj last Friday, Kerubino Mawien, the county’s Executive Director said floods from heavy rains washed away crops.

He said the government distributed about 200 sacks of sorghum at affordable prices, but they were insufficient for the huge population. The local official urged the concerned authorities to allocate additional food stuffs to save lives of thousands of people.

Close to 1 million people in many parts of South Sudan were directly affected by flooding that destroyed 73,000 metric tons of potential harvests and wiped out tens of thousands of cattle and goats on which people depend for survival.

Last year, the government of South Sudan declared a state of emergency in late October in Bahr el Ghazal, Greater Upper Nile and Greater Equatoria regions because of the floods, calling for international assistance to be stepped up.
