More than 60 students of Torit Technical Institute graduated on Tuesday after nine months of intensive training in tailoring, carpentry and joinery, brick laying and concrete practice.
The second batch of the students who graduated obtained certificates of completion and start-up kits for their practical work.
The institute’s principle, Germano Okello said 63 students graduated.
“We have a good number of trainees who have joined us, we have 63 trainees who graduated today [Tuesday]. In the department of carpentry and joinery, we have 16 (two females and 14 males), in the department of brick laying and concrete practice, we have 19 trainees (two females and 17 males). Majority of females are in the tailoring department, where we have 24 and two males,” he said.
Okello urged graduates to put knowledge and skills acquired into practice.
Meanwhile, the project manager of AVSI Torit branch, Alkuta Joseph said they will continue supporting vocational and technical schools.
“AVSI is willing to continue to support and collaborate with the line ministry in giving services to the people of South Sudan, Torit and the former Eastern Equatoria because we are still operating all over Kapoeta,” said Alkuta.
“This is something very productive. AVSI is encouraging localization of the organization and the local staffs will come up,” he added.
Otim Noel Chovan, a brick laying and concrete practice graduate, said skills acquired will help them deliver services to the community.
He urged government and humanitarian agencies to engage the youth in practical work to reduce idleness and criminal activities.
