Over 60 civilians abducted in Tore County: lawmaker

Unknown gunmen abducted 62 civilians, mostly women and children, in two separate incidences in Tore County of Yei River State last week, an area lawmaker said.

Unknown gunmen abducted 62 civilians, mostly women and children, in two separate incidences in Tore County of Yei River State last week, an area lawmaker said.

The incidences reportedly occurred in Rasol and Minyori payams.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Matatiya Nemaya, a lawmaker representing Tore area in the state legislative assembly said several grass-thatched huts were burnt and a 12-year-old boy was killed during the abduction.

He strongly condemned the act, urging the perpetrators to allow peace to prevail and ensure that innocent civilians are protected.

“The abductors burnt down 25 grass-thatched houses and a 12-year-old boy was burnt to death. Also, 62 people, mostly women and children, were abducted. A teacher and one person were abducted at six miles while on the way to Yei town,” said Matatiya.

He urged the International Committee of the Red Cross and other actors to ensure safe and unconditional release of the abductees.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the two incidences.
