Authorities in Twic East County in South Sudan’s Jonglei state said between 500 and 600 cattle were recovered from raiders.
Twic East County Commissioner Dau Akoi Jurkuch told Radio Tamazuj that Pawuoi cattle camp was raided mid-day Tuesday when a group of armed men stole them from a grazing area, adding that one person was killed and another wounded during the attack.
A group of Twic East youths then set out to recover the cattle, and chased away the raiders by 6 pm.
Akoi said he suspected the raiders came from Murle side.
“This is the third time for such activities to happen in Twic East County since the rebels left the Jonglei capital Bor and am asking the leadership of Greater Pibor Administration to work together in order to stop these criminals at the borders,” he said.
Radio Tamazuj could not reach the Greater Pibor Chief Administrator David Yau Yau for comment due to poor mobile networks.
Similar incidents of cattle theft and recovery took place near Bor town in November and December.
