More than 500 head of cattle were raided by gunmen at Lori Payam in Nyepo County in South Sudan’s Yei River State on Sunday, a local official said.

Nyepo County Commissioner Julius Lokonga told Radio Tamazuj that the cattle raiders came from Jonglei State and took about 540 cattle from local residents, saying the attackers headed towards Juba after the incident.

“Some cattle keepers from Jonglei came to Lori Payam in Nyepo County and took 540 heads of cattle belonging to the local residents,” said Julius.

Lokonga pointed out that incident caused fear and panic among citizens in the area. He called on the relevant authorities in Yei River and Jonglei States to intervene and return the stolen cattle to their owners.

“Therefore, I would like to appeal to the state authorities to intervene so that the heads  of cattle are returned to the right owners,” he said.
