More than five hundred people with cataract eye disease will undergo treatment in Aweil town of South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
The eye treatment campaign which commenced on Monday will go on for seven days and is supported by the German government.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the health adviser for the Catholic Diocese of Wau, Tatiana Gerber, appreciated the German government for funding the campaign.
Gerber said that according to reports, more than 10,000 people suffer from eye sicknesses in Norther Bhar el Ghazal State.
“We came here for an eye campaign because it is a demand in Northern Bahr el Ghazal where the number of blind people is high. We estimated that over 10,000 people are suffering due to cataracts which are curable,’’ Gerber said. “At the moment we are targeting 500 but we hope to find another donor to jump in because we have over 1,000 people who need operations and many are coming on the way.”
