Police in Juba City last week apprehended over 50 people for illegally allotting land in the Amadi suburb along the Juba-Yei road.
Earlier, the Juba County Commissioner had warned the public against getting duped in the Amadi area land allocations saying that it was illegal and criminal.
On Tuesday last week, the governor of Central Equatorial State, Emmanuel Adil, made an impromptu visit to the Amadi area of the city after hearing about the illegal allocation of land by purported community leaders. The latter was arrested and detained by police.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj by phone Juba County Commissioner Charles Joseph Wani, said those arrested will be prosecuted.
“Of course they will face the law, they will be asked to answer some questions and they will be jailed for not less than a year, according to the charges brought against them,” Commissioner Wani said. “The people are over 50 in number. Anybody I caught from there is a criminal, so when someone is caught at a criminal place we treat them as a criminal unless the investigator finds out those who are innocent and those who are not criminals. The investigation is taking place."
Meanwhile, the state cabinet affairs minister, Wayi Goodwill, said that the governor of Central Equatorial State condemned the act and cautioned the public about the dangers of acquiring land illegally.
“The governor condemns this act of criminality and warns the public against indulging themselves in acquiring land illegally. Anyone who wants land should be able to follow the right procedures so that he can be protected. Those who will be proved guilty will have to face the law,” Wayi said.
