Over 50 head of cattle were stolen over the weekend during a raid by a group of armed men in Duk County of Jonglei State, local officials said.
Elijah Manyok Ayiei, the county executive director, told Radio Tamazuj that the animals were left grazing in an area two kilometers in the eastern outskirts of the county headquarters, Duk Padiet town when the bandits made away with them on Friday morning.
“Those 58 cows were stolen at 11 am while they were being grazed. There were no casualties during the incident because there was no confrontation,” Manyok said.
The county official said the area is calm despite the incident and that the youths are still pursuing the bandits to recover the stolen animals.
The county police inspector, Major Samuel Tut Maker, said, “no one has been arrested in connection with the cattle raiding incident.”
Cattle raids, most often violent, are common among the communities in greater Jonglei.
