Almost 4,000 families from South Sudan’s Northern Bahr al Ghazal state have crossed to the bordering Ad Daein town in Sudan’s East Darfur state due to hunger in their area, according to activists.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj from Ad Daein town, several activists said over 4,000 families or more than 18,000 people from Northern Bahr al Ghazal state fled to the area.
They further said the displaced families were experiencing deteriorating humanitarian conditions amid absence of international NGOs operating in Ad Daein town.
Abu-Bakr Mohamed Issa, a local journalist, said that the suffering South Sudanese families are currently stranded in Khor Omar camp and that they need humanitarian aid, saying the food given by the host community was inadequate.
The Sudanese journalist pointed out that a preliminary needs assessment by the Sudanese Red Crescent and Humanitarian Aid Commission registered about 18,000 South Sudanese people. He confirmed that the families need urgent intervention from humanitarians before their conditions deteriorate further.
“Their number is being registered every day by the Sudanese Red Crescent and Humanitarian Aid Commission and their number may increase any time because the situation in South Sudan is bad,” he said.
Radio Tamazuj earlier reported that thousands of South Sudanese people from Northern Bahr el Ghazal have also fled to Khartoum in recent weeks following the opening of the border with the north amid hunger in the south.
