Officials in South Sudan’s Koch county in Unity State say more than 4,000 households, an equivalent of 10,000 people displaced by floods last week are in dire need of humanitarian support.
The South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (SSRRC) county coordinator, Ruot Riak, told Radio Tamazuj on Saturday that over 10,000 individuals have been displaced to higher grounds.
“Many flood-displaced people are in Koch within the county while others have gone to Mirmir and Koch County. These are the only highlands Mirmir Payam and Koch County (town) for displaced people when there is a disaster like this,” he said.
According to an assessment of the affected areas, Riak says the displaced communities are living in harsh conditions and need humanitarian support.
The county official further revealed that Koch county has recorded about seven cases of snakebites with no casualties since June. But, he said cases of malaria and waterborne diseases are on the rise with no interventions.
“We are eating water-lilies due to the situation. We request the government at the national level and the state to look at our situation in Koch County and other counties in the unity state,” Nyadoctor Wichjial, a displaced person in Koch said. “We haven’t received any food from the humanitarian agencies since June up to this month.”
