More than 300 individuals have undergone free eye surgery for trachoma and cataract at the Leer Community Centre and Mary John Primary School in Leer County of Unity State.
The initiative, organized by the Christian Blind Mission (CBM) with support from the National Ministry of Health and the State of Health, aimed to address pressing eye-related issues within the community.
The free eye camp, which spanned from July 28 to August 18, witnessed a remarkable turnout of patients from various parts of Leer and neighbouring areas.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Nyalada Banding, the Leer County Health Director, said: “The patients from various parts of Leer, including other areas, received treatment for cataracts and trachoma.”
She added “The Leer Community turned up in big numbers here, and 18 August was the final day for free eye surgeries. This sentiment was echoed by the community, which greatly appreciated the relief provided by the eye camp and requested its extension to more areas of the state.
James Nguen, a beneficiary of the free eye treatment, enthusiastically shared his experience and said: “Two of my eyes were operated on. I am among those who received surgeries. We have now regained our sight. We are delighted with the success of the free eye camp.” Nguen also urged the government and relevant health ministries to continue collaborating with organizations to expand such crucial services.
Kai Lieth, who had been suffering from eye complications for eight years, was another patient who experienced a life-changing transformation through the surgeries. Lieth expressed his gratitude, “I can see everything around Leer County right now. I thank the National Ministry of Health as well as Unity State Ministry of Health and the Christian Blind Mission for organizing this eye surgery camp.”
Lokii Martine Lokure, an eye surgeon at the National Ministry of Health, affirmed the significance of the event, revealing plans for potential future interventions. “The turn up for the free eye surgery was big,” Lokure said, hinting at potential similar eye treatment camps in the coming year for Leer County.
The week-long operation not only brought joy to the people of Leer County but also highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between medical organizations and local authorities in addressing vital healthcare needs.
