A humanitarian official at the South Sudanese embassy in Khartoum said nearly 300,000 South Sudanese refugees have crossed to Sudan in the last three weeks following the outbreak of fighting in Juba.
Jeremiah Abraham, humanitarian attaché at the embassy, told Radio Tamazuj that influx of South Sudanese nationals into Sudan borders is still continuing since clashes erupted between the government forces and armed opposition fighters in Juba recently.
The embassy staff further said they couldn’t obtain an accurate number. However, he said the number of people who crossed to White Nile, East and West Darfur States stands at 300,000.
Jeremiah pointed out that the conflict-affected people especially women and children were experiencing a deteriorating humanitarian situation.
“More than 300,000 people crossed the border to White Nile and East and West Darfur states, but we don’t have statistics because we don’t’ have people on the ground” He said. “Their condition is very bad especially during this rainy season, and the camp where they are not good”.
Abraham urged international humanitarian organizations to coordinate with indigenous NGOs in Sudan to provide assistance to the needy people as soon as possible. The official called for peace so the conflict-displaced families can return back to their areas of origin.
