Authorities in South Sudan’s Warrap state on Tuesday said over 250 heads of cattle were collected as blood compensation from the Wunthuch section in Tonj East County.

Last month, the Baac section of Mapora Payam and Wunthuc section of Ayek Payam in Tonj East clashed in revenge attacks resulting in the death of nine people from both sides, according to officials.

John Deng Kok, Tonj East county commissioner said 250 cattle were collected from the Wunthuch section saying a similar exercise will be conducted in the Baac section.

“Last month, one person was killed by Baac youth from Wunthuch and the complainers raised the case which was taken to a magistrate court in Tonj South county and the youth from Wunthuch were inpatient so they attacked Ajakdit village in Baac section and killed one person,” Kok stated.

Deng said the attacks continued until nine people were killed. He said he received directives from the state governor to compensate those killed.

He noted that some people including area chiefs and youth have been arrested following the attacks.

“I have arrested 12 chiefs plus youth who have been involved in the clashes and have collected over 250 head of cattle for the blood compensations of four people who were killed in Baac,” he said.

Moses Madot, a member of parliament in the state assembly confirmed the collection of cattle for blood compensation.

“I am now in Kacuat in my constituency and the collection of cattle is going on on both sides so that the cattle are to be exchanged for blood compensations,” he said.
