The ministry of gender and social development in South Sudan’s Lakes state on Monday launched relief food distribution to the vulnerable population there.

The ministry of gender and social development in South Sudan's Lakes state on Monday launched relief food distribution to the vulnerable population there.

About 155 bags of cereals donated by the World Food Programme (WFP) was distributed by Plan International organization in Rumbek.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the minister of gender and social development in Lakes State Ding Mario Lamba was grateful for the donation but said more than 250 vulnerable people registered by the ministry did not receive any food assistance.

According to her, the ministry has registered about 446 needy people.

"When 256 vulnerable people were left out, I wrote a complaint letter and I took it there to Plan International who are the implementors for consideration," she added.

The minister said the humanitarian partners have promised to distribute food aid to all seven counties in the state.

Issac Marol Anyuonic, the focal point of the ministry's rural development department, said that the food aid was for the vulnerable group which includes the blind, paralyzed, and the disabled in Rumbek.

Marol says each household received 35 kilograms of cereal during the distribution.

A beneficiary, Abraham Muorchol Dong, said many vulnerable people were left out of the distribution.

"The ratio cards given are not enough. Only 206 vulnerable people have obtained cards while the majority are left out and these people are suffering a lot," he said.

He adds, “We the vulnerable group are facing a lot of challenges. Our children now are not able to afford school fees. In most government schools, the registration fee for each child is 3,500 SSP and in private schools, each child is being registered with 15,000 SSP. We never want our children to be vulnerable people like us. We urged the government to help us so that our children get registered in the schools. Another challenge is health and insecurity in Lakes State."

Mourchol thanked the government and its partners for providing food to the vulnerable population in Lakes State.
