Unity State Governor Dr. Joseph Monytuil has donated 1280 sacks of sorghum as food aid to at least 1124 people in Jaak Payam in Koch County.
The County Relief and Rehabilitation Director, Ruon Riak, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the donation is part of the state government’s support to the Koch County community.
“These food items were donated by Unity State Governor Dr. Joseph Nguen Monytuil and it was mainly to support the community and to reduce malnutrition, hunger, and starvation,” he said.
According to Riak more sorghum delivered by six trucks will be distributed in five payams in Koch County.
“The style of distribution is that every three people will get one 90-kilogram bag of sorghum. The food was brought from Sudan and more are still on the way to Koch County but will be distributed to other payams affected by floods,” he explained. “Our government is working hard to support all the communities in Koch County because humanitarian agencies are facing transportation challenges which sometimes delay them for two months while children are suffering from hunger and starvation.”
On her part, Angelina Nyaruai, a Jaak Payam dweller confirmed receipt of the food aid and said she was grateful and thanked the governor.
“We received our food today (Monday) and three people shared one 90-kilogram sack. It is the first time to receive such food in Koch County since the beginning of the flooding,” she said. “I am very happy to receive the food and want to thank the governor of Unity State for giving us this food at the right time.”
Since 2020, thousands of people have been displaced by flooding in Unity State and other parts of the country and have been mostly dependent on food assistance.
