Over 100 SPLA deserters crossed to Meiram in Sudan’s West Kordofan state, local residents said yesterday.

Over 100 SPLA deserters crossed to Meiram in Sudan’s West Kordofan state, local residents said yesterday.

Speaking to told Radio Tamazuj Thursday several citizens said that armed soldiers between 110 and 150 in number including three officers crossed from Bahr el Ghazal region and surrendered themselves to the local authorities in Meiram Locality.

The source claimed they were of Nuer ethnicity and arrived exhausted. 

The soldiers said they defected from the national army units in Western Bahr el Ghazal and Northern Bahr el Ghazal states, according to the same source.

“They Nuer soldiers claimed that they decided to defect from the SPLA ranks due to harassment by Dinka soldiers in the army,” one resident said. “But the defectors have already been disarmed by the authorities and they are now in military units.”
