More than 100 people have undergone eye surgery to restore their vision in free cataract operations at Maratha Eye Clinic in Yei River County.
Teresa Kamba, an elderly woman, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the operation has enabled her to restore her lost vision after several years with blindness.
“In the past, I could not even see the soil and moving objects like human beings and animals. Today, I am very happy to say I can now see everything. I spent many years without seeing and thank the eye doctors for operating my eyes,” she said.
A team of ophthalmologists from Buluk Eye Clinic in Juba conducted the week-long free cataract operations in Yei County.
Susan Khamis, one of the specialists, urged those operated to take care of their eyes and seek medical advice if complications arise.
“We operated 116 patients last week and currently we have prepared more patients for eye operations. There are many people undergoing screening for another operation,” said Khamis.
She added, “We advise patients to bath using clean warm water, attend to medication, avoid eating hard foods like bush meat and also avoid farming activities and keep medicines in safe places”.
A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Cataracts often develop slowly and can affect one or both eyes.
