The governor of South Sudan’s Gok state, Madhang Majok Meen, said at least 124 people have been killed and 108 wounded during recent inter-communal clashes among local communities in the state.
Addressing members of the Council of States in Juba on Thursday after being summoned, Majok said he had issued an order to arrest some members of his state assembly for causing insecurity.
Governor Majok accused local politicians in Gok of inciting violence among the communities with a goal of consolidating power.
He also claimed that since the state was established, he has worked tirelessly to maintain security in the state but he has failed due to local politics of division along ethnicity.
The head of Council of State, Joseph Bol Chan, called on Governor Majok to exert more effort to maintain security and unite the communities.
