More than 10,000 internally displaced persons in Tore County of South Sudan’s Yei River State are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, an official said.

Tore County Commissioner Martin Mullai told Radio Tamazuj that the IDPs who had earlier fled their homes when conflict erupted in the area in 2016 are mostly women, children and the elderly.

He noted that the IDPs survive on wild yams and tree leaves.

Mullai added that no humanitarian organization has visited the area to either assess the needs of the population or provide humanitarian assistance.

“Currently we have 4,520 in Mapoko village and 4,000 others in Goli and 6,270 IDPs in Tore Centre and there is no humanitarian intervention till now. These vulnerable people need food, medicines, seeds and farm implements, and other non-food items because these people have been here for long without assistance,” he appealed.

According to the commissioner, most humanitarian organizations operating in Yei River State said they could not access Tore County due to insecurity. But Mullai claims the security situation has significantly improved prompting the return of those who had sought refuge in different parts of the region.

Tore County, located about 48 miles north of Yei River State is one of the counties badly affected by the conflict.
