Authorities in Malakal, Upper Nile State say more than 1,500 flood-displaced people from Jonglei State arrived in Malakal town on 26 and 27th July 2021.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the chairperson of the state Relief and Rehabilitation Commission Yoannis William said they had received about 1,500 displaced people, mostly women, children, and the elderly from Fangak and Piji counties of Jonglei State.
He said they are now hosted at the Civil Defense Forces headquarters and that they need urgent humanitarian aid, adding that they have information that the numbers could swell in the coming days.
"We do not encourage the movement of people to refugee camps in neighboring Sudan because of the floods. So we are hosting them in Malakal until the floods recede so they can go back to their homes," William added.
The RRC says many flood-displaced people from Jonglei state have in the past headed to refugee camps in Sudan's White Nile State.
