Torrential rains which commenced in late July have displaced 1,135 individuals in Jur River County in Western Bahr el Ghazal state, officials said.
Santino Kur Akec, the county Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) enumerator, told Radio Tamazuj Tuesday that the most affected area is Alel-Thiny Payam and that the displaced people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
“In Alel-Thony Payam, the number of places affected by the floods are Alel-Thony, Gumel, Ayom, Birbir, Athor, Mibior, and Pidhieu which are bomas,” he said. “The number of households displaced is 197 and the population in those households displaced is 1,237.”
Kur said the displaced persons are sheltering at a local school while others moved to high ground.
“Currently, they are in Alel-Thony Primary School, and also 328 other affected households are sheltering on high grounds in the payam,” he said.
Kur said the flooding had affected crops and livestock and that he reported the situation to the state authorities on Monday and that the RRC office promised to deliver humanitarian assistance.
