A political party has called on the national government in Juba to devolve more powers to the proposed Wau State in an attempt to tackle the insecurity situation.

Juma Zacharia Deng, Secretary General of the opposition United Democratic Front-Mainstream party (UDF-Mainstream) accused the national army of failing to respect President’s Kiir ceasefire in the area.

He claimed that the government forces have been launching attacks on the SPLA-IO positions southwest of Wau town. “The SPLA forces didn’t respect the directives of the President to ceasefire which is fuelling the situation, because there is a lack of discipline among the army in the area” said Deng.

He pointed out that the attacks caused insecurity, besides the bad relationship between the SPLA and citizens in Wau. Deng pointed out that the SPLA forces receive orders from Juba and that the newly appointed governor of Wau State cannot control undisciplined soldiers.

“The directives come from the center and the army does not receive orders from the governor as the chairman of the state security committee” he explained.

The leading party member called on the national government in Juba to give more powers to the newly appointed governor in an attempt to control the security situation in the state and move the SPLA forces out of the town.
