The group of Other Political Parties (OPP) has chosen one ministry and deputy minister position in the coalition government, a senior opposition official said Wednesday.

The peace agreement gives the Other Political Parties (OPP) one ministerial portfolio, one deputy minister position and 30 seats in the national assembly. The agreement also allocates 8% of responsibility sharing ratio to OPP at state and local government levels.

“We have picked our ministry and deputy minister position from different clusters after consultations. We are still discussing the issue of one governorship position for OPP,” Peter Mayen Majongdit,” a leading member of the Other Political Paties, told Radio Tamazuj.

Mr. Majongdit, who is also the leader of the People’s Liberal Party (PLP), declined to reveal the ministerial portfolio selected by his group.

“I can confirm that we picked one ministry and one deputy minister. We have selected a ministry that can provide services to our people,” he explained.

According to Majongdit, the members of the Other Political Parties have not yet discussed the issue of MP nominees. “We would appoint the third deputy speaker in the parliament. Also, we will make sure that at least 10 women are appointed to represent OPP in the national assembly,” Majongdit said.

South Sudan’s rival leaders on Saturday started the process of forming a coalition government, in line with the September 2018 peace deal.

Opposition leader Riek Machar was sworn in as first vice president. Machar took the oath of office with four other vice presidents: James Wani Igga, Taban Deng Gai, Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior, and Hussein Abdelbagi Akol.

The transitional government is not yet finalized as ministers, deputy ministers and state governors are still to be appointed.
