Patriotism is a strong sense of love, devotion, and attachment to one’s country or nation. It is a feeling of pride and loyalty that goes beyond personal interests and promotes the well-being of the entire community. Patriotism is often associated with a sense of duty, respect for national symbols, and a willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good.
Thirteen years down the line, we got our independence on the 9th of July 2011, after we unanimously voted for separation from Sudan in a referendum recognized by the international community. The results of that popular referendum freed us from the north where we were treated as third-class citizens and we became the first-class citizens in our Nation. Millions of Martyrs sacrificed their lives for us to have this nation. Independence Day is a significant national holiday celebrated in many countries around the world. It commemorates the day when a nation gained independence from colonial rule or foreign domination. This holiday holds immense importance for the people of the country, as it symbolizes their freedom, sovereignty, and identity.
Having said this, the question that we should ask ourselves is, are we being patriotic while we don’t celebrate our independence anniversary annually? Is the independence anniversary important? Why do we honor religious events more than our Independence Day? Who always adjourn our independence anniversary celebration? When is it going to be celebrated again? Why did the Ministry of Labor approve only one day for the celebration of 9 July? Did we have a country by mistake or is our country being hijacked by the then presumed enemies? Who approved the budget for Independence Day celebrations? I leave it to you. The Independence is a result of our struggle for freedom, sovereignty, self-determination, and dignity. Salutations to our heroes and heroine for giving us a country.
Why do I think above all odds that we should at least honor and celebrate our Independence Day as a sacred nationwide event annually? Here are the reasons;
- Independence Day is a day that we share our sense of National Identity: Independence Day celebrations help reinforce a sense of national unity among us as citizens, reminding us of our shared history and heritage as South Sudanese.
- Independence Day is the day of showing our Patriotism: The occasion encourages patriotism and a sense of pride in the country’s achievements and rich culture and history, fostering a stronger sense of belonging among the population.
- Independence Day is a day of Historical Remembrance: It serves as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made by previous generations especially our heroes and heroines in achieving independence and sovereignty, honoring their legacy. By commemorating this day, the younger generation can learn about their country’s history and the importance of preserving its heritage.
- Also, Independence Day is a day for showing our Nationalism: Independence Day celebrations promote nationalism and a sense of independence, reinforcing the idea that the country is self-governed and free from external influence.
- Independence Day nonetheless, provides a chance for Civic Education to the young ones: The celebrations provide an opportunity to educate citizens, especially children, about the history and significance of the country’s independence, fostering a deeper understanding of their nation’s history.
- Independence Day is a day for our National Pride: It allows citizens to celebrate their country’s achievements and accomplishments, fostering a sense of national pride and boosting morale for having a country.
- Cultural Heritage: Independence Day celebrations often involve traditional ceremonies, parades, and other cultural events, helping to preserve and promote the country’s unique cultural heritage.
- National Unity: The occasion serves as a unifying force, bringing people from diverse backgrounds together to celebrate their shared identity and history.
- Inspiration for future generations: Independence Day serves as an inspiration for future generations, reminding them of the importance of freedom, democracy, and human rights. It instills in them a sense of responsibility to protect and preserve the values and principles that their forefathers fought for. By celebrating this day, the younger generation can be motivated to work towards a better future for their country and themselves.
- Political Stability: By commemorating the country’s independence, the celebrations help reinforce the principles and values upon which the nation was founded, promoting political stability and continuity.
- International Relations: Independence Day celebrations also serve as an opportunity for the country to engage in diplomatic activities, strengthening its relationships with other nations and promoting its national interests on the global stage.
In conclusion, Independence Day holds immense importance for a country and its people. It celebrates the nation’s history, fosters national pride, inspires future generations, and renews the national spirit. By celebrating this day, the people of a country can remember their heritage, honor their ancestors, and work towards a brighter future. Therefore, Independence Day should be celebrated over other occasions in a country, as it serves as a powerful symbol of freedom, unity, and national identity.
Happy Independence Day. South Sudan Oyee!
