Opinion | Building South Sudan’s future: Youth as the pillars of unity

South Sudanese youth, who account for over 70% of the population, are not merely the promise of tomorrow—they are the driving force of today. With their boundless energy, resilience, and determination, they hold the power to shape a united, peaceful, and prosperous South Sudan. In a country scarred by years of conflict, disunity, and economic challenges, the YouthYouth have an extraordinary role in healing wounds, fostering reconciliation, and building a stronger nation.

To realize this vision, the YouthYouth must take the lead in championing the values of unity, love, and harmony. Unity does not mean the absence of diversity but the celebration of it. South Sudan’s cultural richness, which includes over 60 ethnic groups, should be a source of strength, not division. By bridging divides and embracing a shared national identity, the youth can dismantle the barriers of tribalism, conflict, and disunity that have long hindered progress.

South Sudanese youth must rise above political and tribal divisions to foster an environment where collaboration and understanding prevail. Love for one another and the nation can be the foundation for lasting peace. It starts with small actions: promoting dialogue in communities, rejecting hate speech, and supporting initiatives that bring people together. Harmony is achieved when all South Sudanese, regardless of their backgrounds, feel included, valued, and respected.

The path to lasting peace lies firmly in the hands of the youth. They are the changemakers capable of transforming challenges into opportunities. Through collaboration, innovation, and unwavering dedication, South Sudanese youth can lead initiatives that cultivate durable peace and create opportunities that uplift all citizens. From grassroots movements to national campaigns, the YouthYouth have the power to inspire collective action.

Education is one of the most powerful tools for change. Young people must prioritize education as a means to empower themselves and others. Whether through formal schooling, vocational training, or informal learning, education equips YouthYouth with the skills and knowledge necessary to drive development and innovation. Additionally, embracing technology and entrepreneurship can create new opportunities for economic growth, enabling South Sudan to reduce its dependency on external aid.

Youth can also combat societal issues such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality. By forming partnerships with civil society organizations, government bodies, and international institutions, they can advocate for policies that benefit the nation. In refugee camps, villages, and urban centres, youth-led initiatives can promote peace, reconciliation, and development.

South Sudanese Youth are not just shaping the future but building a legacy of hope and resilience today. Through their actions, they can inspire a generation to believe in the possibility of a peaceful and united South Sudan. They can set the standard for leadership grounded in integrity, empathy, and a commitment to the common good.

However, this journey will not be without challenges. The scars of war, economic instability, and political fragmentation remain significant obstacles. Yet, history has shown that young people can overcome even the most daunting challenges when united and determined. South Sudan’s Youth must look to their peers worldwide who have successfully driven change in their nations, drawing lessons from their struggles and successes.

The time for action is now. South Sudanese youth must rise to the challenge, inspiring collective efforts to shape a South Sudan deserving of its people—a nation bound by peace, united in purpose, and thriving with endless possibilities. The government, civil society, and international partners must also recognize the youth’s potential and invest in their development. Resources, mentorship, and platforms must be provided to empower young people to lead effectively.

As the pillars of unity and peace, South Sudanese youth have a unique opportunity to rewrite the nation’s narrative. Together, they can transform South Sudan into a beacon of hope, resilience, and prosperity in Africa. The dream of a peaceful, united, and prosperous South Sudan is within reach, and it begins with the youth.

The future of South Sudan lies in the hands of its young people. Together, they have the power to create a legacy of peace, unity, and progress that will inspire generations to come. Let this be the moment when South Sudanese youth take their rightful place as the leaders of a new, brighter chapter in the nation’s history.
