One student was killed and more than 20 others injured on Tuesday in violent clashes involving students and allegedly also security personnel at the University of Kordofan in Sudan’s North Kordofan state.
The bloody clashes initially erupted between the students belonging to opposition parties and those supporting the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) during an election campaign to win over the Students’ Union.
Sources confirmed hearing gunfire inside the University campus when students supporting the ruling party entered the University with security organs and clashed with students supporting opposition parties.
The sources also confirmed to Radio Tamazuj the killing of Abu Bakr al-Sidig Hashim, a first year student at the faculty of engineering.
Students belonging to opposition parties accused the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) of trying to win the Students’ Union by illegal means and blocked them from submitting their lists of candidates which led to protests by students belonging to opposition parties at the university.
Meanwhile, in statement issued by students supporting the ruling party obtained by Radio Tamazuj, they accused what they called the ‘movements’ in reference to Darfuri armed movements, of assassinating the student and injuring more than 20 others.
The sources confirmed that the university council held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the situation. Some sources also said there may be possibility of suspending studies at the university until further notice.
