A farmer was shot dead as he worked on his garden in Oguruny village in Torit East County on Saturday, a local official has said.
Torit East County commissioner Toby Majak Thomas told Radio Tamazuj on Monday the killers are suspected to be from neighboring Haforiere village.
“Two criminals from Haforiere went to Oguruny and they got a farmer in the garden and they shot on the 11th. On the 12th they reported to me and I told them to follow the footmarks which we confirmed it is Haforiere village,” he said.
“We have a plan as government to arrest the perpetrators and also ordering the youth of Haforiere to arrest the criminals and handover to government because they admitted it is the thinking of individuals who picked a gun and go for killings but not the whole community,” Majak explained.
He called for calm among the Oguruny community promising that the government would bring the perpetrators to book.
The two communities have had revenge attacks that have claimed about 10 lives since 2016 after 16 year-old boy from Haforiere village was shot by suspected Oguruny attackers.
Commissioner Majak noted the government and peace partners are planning to hold accountable the perpetrators to avoid any revenge attacks, adding that the situation remains volatile.
