A road attack along the Yei-Juba road between Yei and Lainya counties on Friday left one passenger dead and one other injured, the minister of information for Yei River State confirmed.
Steven Ladu said a passenger vehicle for Eden Transport Company left Yei for Juba on Friday morning at 7:15 before a group of men stopped the car, shooting one person dead and injuring one.
He said the incident happened after a river called Koya before reaching Lainya County.
At this river a group of people came and stopped the vehicle. When they stopped the vehicle they came out with all guns then people ran away from the car so they shot one person dead and looted the vehicle, he explained.
The minister added that the rest of the people dispersed to the bushes then two went missing but later on in the evening they were found alive with one having minor injuries. All are now in Yei.
He described the incident as an isolated case carried by looters adding that similar cases happened in March this year but after the government increased patrols on the road the incidents decreased. He added that the cases seem to be coming back.
“There are two to three computers were taken… phones were taken, money were taken so we do not know how much money everybody has,” the minister said adding that the general security situation in the whole of Yei River State is normal other than yesterday’s incident.
Ladu said these incidents are uncalled for and the government condemns this behaviour of people who are doing these acts.
“We are here in the process of the implementation of the peace agreement and if there is any group of armed group that is out there they should have been organised and put in cantonment… So we appeal as government to the citizens that this is an isolated incident and the government is doing its best so the security organs will be the one patrolling the roads very early in the morning,” the minister said.
