One person was killed following an attack by armed men in Rumbek Central County of Lakes State on Monday.
The incident happened at 7pm at the Deng-Nhial residential area.
Lakes State Police Spokesperson Maj Elijah Mabor Makuac told Radio Tamazuj that the suspected attackers were from Nielniel section of the Pakam community in Rumbek North County.
“An incident was reported on Monday at around 7pm when unidentified armed men attacked people at Deng-Nhial residential area, killing one person and shooting another, who was taken to the Rumbek State Hospital,” he said
Lakes State civil society activist Daniel Laat Kon said the incident was a pointer to the return of insecurity to the state.
“All these incidences were about revenge killing because if someone is killed and the government does not act, the people were inclined to take the law into their own hands,” he said.
He urged the State government to strengthen the security machinery and come up with other mechanism for patrolling the town.
Kon noted there were no security patrols currently except in the Rumbek market which hosts the police and national security agents,
“Residential areas like Maborngap, Akuac, and Deng-Nhial were in need of additional protection;” he said.
