At least one man was killed and four others wounded in an ambush in Unity State’s Mayom County carried out by armed youth suspected to be from Warrap State’s Tonj North County, a local official said.
Mayom County Commissioner Luka Cheiery said a group of bandits from Tonj North County attacked the herdsmen in the Maduul area of Riah Payam and walked away with 1,590 head of cattle after clashes.
“Last Thursday afternoon, a group of criminals attacked some herdsmen in Maduul. They clashed with the cattle owners but the herders were defeated because they were few,” he said. “The four injured people are receiving treatment at Mayom Hospital.
Cheiery said that his administration often hands back cattle that have been raided from Warrap State.
“Even on 19 January, we handed over a good number of cattle to the Warrap State government,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Warrap State Information Minister William Wol confirmed the incident but said the perpetrators have not been apprehended.
“The reason why we did not arrest them is because we have a challenge of telephone communication network between us here in the headquarters and the local authorities in Tonj North County,” he said.
